History of Polar Bear Plunge

For the past 18 years, the Polar Bear Plunge has been a meaningful example of the Mater Dei Catholic community coming together to support families who desire to give their children the gift of a Catholic education. Funds raised through the Polar Bear Plunge provide tuition assistance to families who may not qualify for Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) programs but face unique financial circumstances or need additional support to remain part of the Mater Dei Catholic community. What began in 2009 with eight original “Plungers” from Saint Stanislaus School, led by Miss Diane McCaughan, has grown into a cherished tradition rooted in faith, generosity, and a shared belief in the gift of Catholic education.

From 2009 to 2020, administration, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends united each year to raise funds for this mission by bravely plunging into the chilly Atlantic Ocean in February. By 2020, the Mater Dei Catholic Polar Bear Plunge Team had grown to more than 112 participants who gathered in Sea Isle City to show their support for Catholic education. When the Sea Isle City plunge event was canceled, our community’s commitment never wavered. Instead, administration, faculty, staff, alumni, and parents came together to reimagine the Polar Bear Plunge through festivals and Dance-A-Thons, ensuring this important work continued despite the challenge.

Our goal for 2026 is to raise $60,000 to continue walking alongside families who value a Catholic education for their children. Can you help us reach our goal?

"Peace is Built in the Heart"

Pope Leo XIV’s words remind us of a powerful truth: peace doesn’t start in the world around us—it begins within each of us. It is shaped by love, nourished by prayer, and strengthened by our desire to live as Jesus taught.

At Mater Dei Catholic School, we embrace this call to be peacemakers. Pope Leo’s message speaks to everyone, but especially to our children, who are growing into the people God created them to be. When peace lives in our hearts, it flows into our words, our choices, and our relationships.

When every heart becomes a home for peace, then our school, our homes, and our entire community can become places of kindness, forgiveness, justice, and joy. Pope Leo is calling us to be different—to build peace through the way we live, speak, and treat one another each day.

This year, let us journey together as builders of peace—rooted in God’s love, guided by His truth, and strengthened by His mercy.
